Twice Burned, Never Shy (2024)

Another lame, dull, terrible chapter from moi but eh at least it is better than watching 'Santa Claus Conquers the Martians'. A terrible movie it is. Anyway here we go and thanks for Flaze who somewhat helped me with this, I really appreciate all the help I got because boy howdy did I need it.

Chapter 6 - "Step into the prom life"

It was the night of nights on the social calendar for all the students. It was the night of prom and all that hard work and lack of studying led to a day of relaxation. For Abigail Gordon though, it was going to be one of the most important in her life. Her aim was to become prom queen like her friends which was an aim that she held since starting school. She needed to find a date like all her friends to boost her chances to win. Abbie was the lone single girl who was repeatedly asked out by several guys and a few girls but she needed someone to not lower her social status for date.

Abbie lived in a giant mansion, one of the biggest in the area with her father and a couple of maids, butlers and a driver. Her mother went to Switzerland after the divorce and they never had a relationship at all. Her father on the other hand was someone she looked up to but rarely saw. He was a big businessman in finance even though she would tell everyone in school that he was just a hotel CEO to make her father sound ‘cool’ and less geeky in her opinion. He did have a proper parent relationship with Abigail as she was his only child and nor did he even re-marry or dated anyone at all. That left him to give his undivided attention to his daughter and his work, mainly the latter. She didn’t mind it at all because she had all the maids and butlers to take care of her and to spend time with along with her ‘friends’.

Abigail Gordon, the second fiddle of popular girls, the Robin or the Supergirl of the school. She wasn’t the absolute popular girl, she wasn’t dating the quarterback or the head cheerleader however she was high on the social ladder even though she was seen as a sidekick or a lackey to the most popular girls of the school. It didn’t matter to her as long as she thought she was liked. She stared at herself from her giant mirror as she tried to figure out how to make herself look as perfect as possible. Her room was giant spacious room with a king-sized bed, light blue lace curtains, a few items of décor to comply with the dark blue motif theme that started with the walls. There were various giant stuffed animals neatly placed on the base of her pillows on top of her bed and an art deco poster of New York City in the 1930’s. She had a giant screen television plastered on the wall of her bedroom with stacks of Blu-ray CDs stacked on top of a black cabinet containing music CDs, a stereo and an old, dusty Playstation 2 behind protective glass.

“I hope this dress helps me win Prom Queen, Daddy did pay 400 dollars for it.” Abbie posed in lovely black gown with a turtle neckline bodice, cap sleeves and dazzling tonal lace topped by an illusion lining. The full length gown slides to a spit hemline creating a lovely chic and classy look. Her lovely silky brown hair was swept to the right. “I don’t know if it makes me look older, maybe that’s a good. Oh I don’t know….” She closed her eyes and sat on her bed. “Why is this so hard? Like I shouldn’t even question myself? I’m a like a fashion know-it-all and these other girls don’t even know anything about fashion unless I told them…hmmm? I’m thinking too much.” She pondered as she hugged her stuffed koala.

A bright light shone from Abbie’s window. “Oh no,” She looked at it as she quickly rushed to put her long silver earrings on and to grab her purse. “He is here with a Lincoln? Like that’s strange, that’s an expensive car.” She blinked a few times before running down several flights of stairs in her large white mansion with a long driveway lit up by small florescent garden lights and a fountain with blue lights for added light effects, to a golden security gate which led to the car that was parked outside . She looked at the car for a few seconds before taking a deep breath until she realized that she was barefoot, holding her black heels with one hand and the other hand holding her black gown as she quickly made her way to the car.

“Sorry I forgot to put them on,” Abbie held her black heels as she had the door opened for her by her date. “I am so like sorry that took so long, Ryan.” She said in her valley girl voice, as she put her heels on. “Hey you look pretty sharp,” She smiled while taking a glance at Ryan. He was wearing a black suit jacket with a light-ish blue collared buttoned shirt with a scarlet tie.

“Not compared to you, man….” Ryan couldn’t believe how beautiful Abbie looked, that he blinked several times and ran his eyes up and down his date. “You look absolutely stunning, I’m actually really stunned…wow…oh right.” He smiled as he pulled out a bouquet of red roses from the back seat of his Lincoln. “Here for you,” He gave Abbie the bouquet of roses before starting up the car.

“Why thank you, I do like them a lot,” Abbie took a whiff of the flowers before putting them at the back seat of the car. “Like I have two questions,”

“Shoot,” Ryan muttered as he drove back on to the asphalt road that was dimly lit by the street lights and the Lincoln’s headlights. There were no other cars on the road and barely any other lights on even by the other rich, expensive houses on the same street.

“Why did you ask me to be your date and how did you get this car?” She asked as she looked at him, “I mean like you had Nicugly, I mean Nicole. I thought you and here were like super close even though she has a boyfriend but she’s going with your best friend, so why did you like totally ask me?” She took her phone out and took a selfie before turning her gaze back to Ryan.

Ryan stopped at a red light before shrugging, “Some lady gave it to me kind of, I think and well I guess it is because Nicole and I are just friends and it doesn’t matter you know. I’m cool with it but why did you accept me?” He turned the tables on her before staring at a police car that drove through a red line with the siren on.

“Because you helped me get my grades up and Daddy said it would be right to help someone who helped you.” The brunette teen smiled, staring at the road and cars that zoomed past at the intersection. “I can’t wait to be prom queen…umm like the light is green.”

“I know, I know,” The blonde male muttered as he accelerated quickly, “So what happens if you don’t win?”

“I’ll just give up, I’m destined for this. I can’t like bear to lose.” She looked at the surroundings as they stopped right at another traffic light. The surroundings included an old style movie theatre with a neon sign with the words matinee. “I really want to win,” Abbie sighed unhappily. “What happens if I don’t win? I’ll move to Alaska or worse, Cleveland. I don’t wanna go to Cleveland,” She whined as Ryan started to fiddle with the glove compartment placed above the air-conditioner and radio on the dashboard of the car.

“Hey, hey don’t worry about that,” Ryan placed his hand on her shoulder before withdrawing his hand back on the steering wheel. “You’ll win because you are smart and beautiful plus haven’t you heard about the Ghost of the Prom Queen?”

“Errr like no,” She moved her grey-blue eyes to Ryan. “What’s the Ghost of the Prom Queen?” She asked as she pulled out a mirror and her makeup kit to apply some bright red, strawberry lipstick.

“Well the story goes like this….” Ryan relaxed with his right hand on the wheel and is left hand was waffling on making gestures as he started to tell a story to his date.

“There was this girl named Stephanie Curry about 40 or so years ago. She was the most popular girl in the school and had a quarterback boyfriend. Anyway she won Prom Queen on this day except something was wrong. She went absolutely crazy when she found out that it was not the real result, she had lost by one vote. She went absolutely crazy…oh wait I just said that. Anyway she broke up with her boyfriend because she assumed he was cheating on her which he wasn’t. Then she placed a curse on all Prom Queens from this school because of this injustice. She took dragged the actual prom queen from her bed and stood with her in front of the road naked. She started to sing ‘All good girls go to heaven’ before she and the other girl got his by a bus.” Ryan told the brunette woman sitting next to him.

“Then what happened?” Abbie looking a bit worried yet interested, really wanted to hear more about this story. The way that Ryan told the story really did draw her in. She found it little crazy but stranger things have happened to her.

“She died on the spot but the other girl was paralysed. Every single prom queen since then would suffer a misfortune such as death, losing their money, teenage pregnancy even though that’s not a misfortune or a drug addiction.” He tapped the dashboard with his left hand. “Anyway every time the prom queen would appear, you would hear ‘All good girls go to heaven’, and then something bad would happen to them as a pale white ghost with long blonde hair and a pink fluffy dress would appear and boom, so I guess it is not true but it is still a funny story right?”

“As if,” She scoffed. “It is totally lame and so not funny either, stop trying to scare me with your totally bogus stories,“ Abbie scoffed as Ryan drove to the parking lot of the school. There were several cars assuming that so many of them would be prepared for backseat adventures later on in the night.

The hall was packed full of teenagers, DJ and a couple of bands, the décor of the school hall was made formal. There were satin, a buffet table, waiters and round tables with white sheets topped with flowers, golden decorations and cutlery. There were girls in very formal dresses ranging for low cut to full length gown while the guys were either decked out in suits or tuxedos that either fit really well or were too big or too small for some of the students. “Shall we mingle, mademoiselle?” Ryan asked holding his right hand out to Abbie.

She took his hand and added “Oui!!!” in delight. They walked to all of Abbie’s friends first and their boyfriends. They all played sports but all for the same football team, the quarterback, the running back and the defensive linesman while Ryan played other sports that did not capture the . He stared at the girls who were compared to Abbie, wearing dresses that just weren’t up to the standard of Abbie’s, they exceeded it and Ryan could not take his eyes off them. They did not seem happy at all, if anything all the mingling was very tense ever since Abigail started to talk to them. He stared at Abbie who was looking extremely stressed, her eyes moving around, not a smile on her face while taking deep breathes. She did not look like she was friendly terms with them, it was like there were some words exchanged between the girls in front of the brunette teen.

“Let’s go,” She grabbed him by the arm and dragged him towards a few students whom were dancing in the dance floor, away from all the tables and just underneath the colored lights that flickered over the area like a club. “Let’s go like dance, I just want to get away from them.” Her eyes focused on her so-called friends. Her tone was agitated as the brunette teen dragged him, pretty forcefully.

“Could I ask what’s wrong?” He asked while stopping her from dragging him any further around the hall. “Look don’t worry about them.” The blonde teen nervously smiled, trying to figure out how to calm down his date. “They are just jealous I think, well that’s just an assumption from watching them I guess and errr let’s dance?” He shrugged before making his way ahead of Abigail towards the dancefloor.

“I guess…also because like there is total competition between all four of us for prom queen, so let’s dance.” She smiled while dragging Ryan again towards him the dance floor. They started to dance to a variety of songs being played by a DJ that seemed to be plucked out of a nightclub even though Ryan was not much of a dancer. However he gave it a go and actually enjoyed it with Abbie even though she was struggling to dance with her black gown and her heels.

Elsewhere Nicole was watching Ryan and Abbie dance from her chair with her elbows resting on the table. She was wearing a blue evening gown but nothing fancy at all, it just looked like a normal prom dress. She didn’t look happy at all as she flicked her strawberry blonde hair in front of Doug. “I can’t believe that she and Ryan went together, she is a powder puff and how did they even decide on this? It is not right at all.” She slammed her hand on the circular table creating a little jump from Doug.

“Are you jelly, Nic?” Doug smiled as he put his head next to her. “They look like they are having fun, heck they look like a great couple….OWW!!!” He was elbowed by Nicole right in the stomach winding him. “So…not…cool,” Doug clutched his stomach as he tried to pour himself a glass of water with the water filled jugs available on the table.

“I may be jealous because he deserves better than that stupid princess, I don’t get it. What does she have that I…I mean better girls don’t have?” She snarled while watching Abbie and Ryan talking to Nuwan who was wearing a black suit, a black tie and white collared shirt, who was with another girl who had platinum blonde hair, thick rimmed black glasses and wearing a dark red high cut dress.

“Beautiful looks, she rich…god dammit Nicole, stop elbowing me in the stomach,” coughed Doug as he clutched his stomach as she elbowed him again. “Don’t you have a boyfriend anyway…wait a second…you have a crush on Ryan or something?” He asked while drinking another glass of water.

“Nooo, nooooo, I’m just hate Abbie so much. I mean I have a boyfriend and I don’t have a crush on Ryan.” She scoffed not even looking at Doug. “I mean seriously that’s just crazy, I mean let’s talk to some people…seriously me having a crush on Ryan. That’s just silly.” Nicole laughed as she got up and skipped towards a few other students nearby.

-----------

Everyone was dancing the night, sitting around doing nothing or screwing around outside the hall, a lot of was happening at the prom. However it was time to announce the prom king and queen and this was the moment that Abbie was waiting for. She watched as a balding grey man who happened to be the principal, came on to the stage wearing a grey suit and black trousers. He got the attention from the crowd with several cheers greeting him for the fact that he was going to make the announcement of the prom queen and king.

“Wish me luck,” Abbie whispered as she tightly squeezed Ryan’s right arm. The rest of the crowd were just as tense to see who would win and if there would be an upset at all.

“Err sure good luck, ouch” Ryan whispered back as she replied by tightening her grip on his arm. “Painful, so very painful,” he thought as he couldn’t feel his right arm, the one that she was grabbing on to.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for me finally to announce the prom king and queen. They will do the customary dance after the announcement and let’s get this done already because my wife is complaining that I spend too much time with you kids and not my own children. Don’t get married, kids, “The grey balding principal was ready to announce the names of the king and queen. “The Prom King is Roger Carlisle, our favourite quarterback, congrats son and you are a role model for all of us,” To which a large, tall male with spiky black hair walked up to the stage with cheers and loud clapping to receive his little gold plated crown. He waved to the crowd before sitting down on a plump red throne which looked really cheap. “And now the prom queen is none other than Nicole Carter…wait really? Are we sure that this right? Oh so it is, well congrats Miss Carter, may you do something productive in life,” The principal who could not be bothered anymore just walked off stage.

Nicole’s eyes widened as she heard her name being announced. It was a total surprise to the school body as everyone was expecting one of the snobbish popular girls to win. It was, if anything a pleasant surprise to the school. She walked carefully on stage and received her gold plated crown before sitting down.

Abbie did not take it well, she ran outside without anyone noticing her except Ryan. She ran outside and looked at the lake nearby. Tears formed in her grey-blue eyes as she stood right in front of a green metal railing as she slammed her left fist on it. Her dream was crushed right in front of her by a girl that she disliked, no disliked, she cried on her arm before composing herself. She was all alone by herself until she felt something covering her shoulders. Abbie looked around looked up to see that her shoulders were covered by a black suit jacket.

“Are you okay?” A male voice tried to reassure her in the best awkward way he could. His voice was awkward in tone and unsure but he figured that it was better than watching girls hitting on Rogers to no avail. Abbie turned around to see Ryan standing in front of her without his jacket. “You seemed cold and don’t worry, you can let it go.” Not really understanding what would happen next. He had a feeling that she would actually punch him in the face.

She started to cry on his shoulder while trying to speak, “I wanted…to…win…so badly,” Her words broken apart by tears and sniffles. “It wasn’t fair at all.” as she slammed her fist on his chest which made him wince with every punch. She did hit a lot harder than he expected but he was relieved that she stopped bawling her eyes out and she did not punch him in the face.

“Hey, hey, you have more to offer than prom queen. Look at you, you have totally improved your grades a lot. You were so remarkably hard working that you managed to excel in a subject at our school where many screw up.” Ryan put his arm around as she was trying compose herself once more even though her eyes were red. “You are like bloody beautiful and look Nicole won because she was just…wait how did she win? I know she is hot but how did she win? But anyway you are going to be a lot more successful than some stupid title that no one will remember at all, it’s like that movie, ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,’” He explained while holding to a handkerchief that was in his suit jacket.

“Really? You really mean that?” Abbie smiled as the last few tears ran down her face even though she didn’t understand how that movie was supposed to make her feel happy but she appreciated the fact that someone cared other than her father and several of her maids and butlers. She took his handkerchief and blew her nose. “Thank you so much, you don’t know how better I feel because I’m not going to get killed by a ghost prom queen,” She stared at him and then gave Ryan a little hug. “I guess it is some like silly title and at least the ghost prom queen won’t be going for like me,” She laughed as she dried her eyes with his suit jacket. “Let’s go back and dance before people think like we are totally doing it,” a massive smile crept on her face as she did a little twirl.

“Bianchi, I’m sorry to interrupt you and your well whatever she is, I’m not judging you,” The pair were startled by a big, tall man with a muscular body. He was wearing a Chicago White Sox cap over his graying brown hair and a brown jacket along with dark blue jeans and white runners. “I need you to come to my office for a second and you can bring along your friend. This is really important Bianchi,”

“Err yeah sure coach but I do have a first name,” Ryan turned to his face the school gym teacher. “You don’t mind, do you Abbie?” He looked at the brunette teen next to him in her beautiful black dress who was smiling even though her eyes were still a little bit red. She replied with a very monotone "eh" as she followed the two men.

----------------------------

All three reached the office of the coach which was pretty cramped with a wooden door that had no widows at all and a stiff wooden doorknob that was difficult to twist. There was a little desk with a laptop, writing equipment while the walls were decorated with shelves that held gold trophies which were next to a framed picture of Charles Oakley eating an orange.

“Alright Bianchi and whatever your name is, please take a seat.” There was one problem, there were no chairs. The awkwardness began as the pair of them shifted looks between each other trying to figure out how they would sit down.

It came to be that Ryan stood up while Abbie sat on the desk, straightening her legs to avoid anything going wrong with her gown. “So why did you call me anyway?” Ryan asked while looking at the coach that they call ‘Coach’ like in Cheers except without the bartending.

“I lost you Bianchi, I lost you to those darn European sports, you and that European girl,” The Coach sighed as he slumped on the lone chair in his office which was behind quite a few golden trophies. Most of the golden trophies were for American football and wrestling. They looked old and the shine was non-existent. They were outshone by the ‘Charles Oakley eating an orange’ picture

“I’m not like European at all,” Abbie exclaimed as she put her hands on her hips, “He has a European last name, I mean like Bianchi is like Italian and French,” but she was ignored.

“I sent some tapes over to people I know that are in the know, you know…well you don’t,” He added as he opened up his Acer Laptop. “He sent it to others and there are 4 of those soccer leagues that are interested in you and sure enough they want to see you play live,” The Coach put his head in his hands while adding a resigned “I can’t believe I lost a basketball player to soccer, I mean it’s soccer…here are the teams that are interested.”

“Oh my god, that’s incredible,” Ryan looked at the screen while Abbie peeked from the side, her hands on his arm and the desk. “I mean I never thought I would pursue a career out of football at all, I just do well at the Youth Leagues and I can’t believe these leagues would look at me like that.”

“Oooh that sounds so like awesome, I’m like the only one here that knows right?” Abbie asked the Coach who nodded slowly still upset over the fact that he lost an athlete to football. “I promise not to tell a soul except my stuffed animals because they are totally in the know, you know…like as if I’ll tell people at school.” Her response was met with a raised eyebrow from Ryan. “I’m serious, I would not tell a soul, I like really, really for sure promise.” She replied in her high pitched valley girl voice.

“You better not, I can’t believe…wait the K-League? South Korea? Really? I don’t even know any of the teams, I don’t play them in FIFA at all,” Ryan was gobsmacked as he looked at the reports from the K-League until he looked down at the rest of the document. “Swiss League, League One and Serie A?” His eyes gleamed in joy as he jumped around in joy

“Oh my god….like…what….” The brunette teen looked absolutely confused as she watched Ryan jumping around like a crazy fool.

“Serie A, Abbie…” He laughed in absolute joy while jumping around the small office, “Serie A, that’s one of the best leagues in the World, I can’t believe it.” He stopped jumping but the wide happy smile was still plastered on his face.

Suddenly a loud bang was made and people were running and screaming outside from the hall as more loud bangs were being made. Ryan gently placed Abbie on the ground and gently opened the wooden door to look outside. More loud noises like explosions from the hall and the parking lot followed, something was amiss. Ryan ran outside without hesitation trying to figure out what was happening. The sound of screaming in terror echoed around the school, police and fire engine sirens in the horizon but they weren’t anywhere close. The blonde teen started to run towards the hall as if it were his duty. He ran on concrete, on grass and on mud, trying to get as fast as possible to the hall.

“May I have the exact details of which teams are interested in Ryan Bianchi?” Abbie sweetly asked the coach as she tried to get a glimpse of the coach’s laptop. He mumbled a few words under his breath before giving the brunette teen the details written on a sticky note. “Thank you,” She waltzed out of the office. “What is happening?” She wondered as she witnessed several people running and screaming for their lives. She took a deep sigh as she ran across the wet sloshed up grass to find Ryan, “Rest in peace, my shoes. They are so gone and so is my gown, total bummer,” Abbie pouted as she could feel all the moisture and mud on her shoes. She ran past several people running in the opposite direction away from the hall, she could hear the screaming which was really irritating her.

Ryan on the other hand continued to run like Abbie towards the direction where everyone else was running from. He bumped into a shorter male with a dark complexion and jet black hair with glasses, which was knocked to the ground, “Nuwan, what on Earth is happening?” Ryan asked while he watched his friend pick up his glasses.

Nuwan cleaned his glasses and dusted off his jacket before answering, “There was some ghost, she looked like she was a hippie and she came and said that she was going to take revenge on all the popular girls including the prom queen and she went ballistic.” He started to explain as he put his glasses back on, “She then started to create some explosions and the girls vanished without a trace, she vowed to take revenge on the prom queen and her cronies, thankfully no one is hurt though…oh hello Abigail,” Nuwan waved at Abbie who was running while holding up the bottom of her black gown. “And oh she exploded your car, your Lincoln among others,” Nuwan looked to see more people running past them, screaming their heads off.

“MY CAR?” Ryan fell on his knees while yelling in a mix of sadness and anger with his arms slamming the wooden floor of the hall. “WHY? THAT MONSTER,” The sound of several car alarms going off and blaring in the background sounding like a concert, drowned out Ryan’s yelling.

“The Ghost of the Prom Queen…like I thought it was a legend or a totally fake, crappy story created by Ryan,” Abbie exclaimed in a shocked and surprised tone as she heard the news about Ryan’s car, his Lincoln being blown up among others. “But if this is true, what should we do?” She asked a confused Nuwan and a distressed Ryan who was still on his knees and sounding like he was crying.

"What do we do?"
