Mr. Douglas Richard Abbott

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Douglas Richard Abbott, age 82, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at his home. Mr. Abbott was born December 30, 1927 in Woodstock, Vermont

The son of the late William Abbott and Jennie Tatro Abbott. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Wayne Abbott and George Abbott.
Mr. Abbott was retired from the U.S. Army after twenty four years of service. He was a charter member of the Lake Gaston Lions Club and a former volunteer fireman with the Roanoke-Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed playing golf and bingo.

Survivors include his wife Josie Edwards Abbott. His daughter, Allyson Taylor and her husband Ronnie of Midlothian, VA. His granddaughter, Angie Losch and her husband Scott and their children, Kyle, Dylan, Trevor and Rachel.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. John Alford officiating.

Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, with full military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lake Gaston Lions Club, 139 Stanley Road, Henrico, NC 27842 or Community Home Care and Hospice, 112 Long Circle, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Mrs. Janice Davis Martin

Apex, NC - Mrs. Janice Davis Martin, age 87, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and a native of Northampton County, died Sunday, October 31, 2010.

Mrs. Martin was born April 7, 1923, the daughter of the late Hiram Hobson Davis and Lessie Bell Davis. She was also predeceased by her husband Joseph Howard Martin Sr.

She traveled extensively during her husbandΒ’s military career making friends all along the way. They lived in Norfolk, VA, Jacksonville, Florida, Durham NC, Roanoke Rapids, NC, and most recently in Apex, NC, to be close to her grandchildren.

Janice graduated from business college and worked many years with Thompson Oil Company in Roanoke Rapids and then also worked at Roanoke-Chowan Regional Housing Authority in Gaston, NC, until her retirement. She always enjoyed friends and family and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her three children, Joseph H. Martin Jr. and his wife Patricia of Wake Forest, Stephen Hobson Martin of Harrisonburg, VA and Dawn Martin Barber and her husband Marcus of Apex. Her grandchildren, David, Catherine and Kimberly Barber, all of Apex.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 4:00 PM at Conway Cemetery, Conway, NC, with Rev. Ed Drew officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Wednesday from 2:30 until 3:30 PM prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Methodist Church, Conway, NC 27820.

Matthew Earl Abernathy

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Matthew Earl Abernathy, age 19, of Roanoke Rapids, died October 28, 2010.

Matt was born June 11, 1991 in Roanoke Rapids. He attended Roanoke Rapids Schools and currently was attending Halifax Community College. He loved fishing, hunting and the Washington Redskins. He was predeceased by his father, Leslie Earl Abernathy.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Abernathy, his sister, Sara Abernathy, his grandparents Christine and Robbie Smith and Linda Abernathy. His aunts. Leslie Barnes, Maria Grant, Rhoni Gregory, Brenda Gregory and Debbie Todd. His cousins, Aaron Barnes, Tori Frappier and Savannah Grant and Renee Gregory. His God Parents, Shelby, Doug and Daniel Barry. Also many special friends, including "The Boys" and a uncle Jason Barnes.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Bobby Turner officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UNC Hospital Burn Center, 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Mrs. Janet Harrison Knox

Aulander, NC - Mrs. Janet Harrison Knox, age 63, of Aulander, NC, died Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Knox was born September 7, 1947, the daughter of the late Paul Woodrow Harrison and Vida Hudson Harrison Phelps. She was a member of Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include her husband Gordon Russell Knox. Her daughters, Tammy Knox Kittrell and her husband G.P. of Corapeake, NC, and Mikki Knox Brown of Harrellsville, NC. Her son, Jason Knox and his wife Patricia of Ahoskie, NC. Her brother, Paul Harrison and his wife Laree of Plymouth, NC. Seven grandchildren, Cassidy Brown, Garrett Brown, Caleb Kittrell, Justin Kittrell all of Corapeake, NC, and Haley Knox, Marley Knox and Kingsley Knox all of Ahoskie, NC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Ray Faircloth and Rev. Danny Harris officiating.

The family will receive friends at Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church Youth Fund.

Mr. Carroll "Keith" Parker

Murfreesboro, NC - Mr. Carroll "Keith" Parker, age 51, of Murfreesboro, NC, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.

Keith was born October 28, 1958 in Hertford County, NC. He was predeceased in death by his father Amos Quenton Parker. Keith was a kind and loving man to everyone.

Survivors include his mother Jean Johnson Lawrence of Murfreesboro, NC, two brothers David Quenton Parker of Morehead City, NC, and Arnold Stacey Parker and wife Donna of Murfreesboro, NC, a son Christopher Stephen Parker of Aulander, NC, also several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate KeithΒ’s life will be held Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Committal will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National AIDS Foundation or Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.

Mrs. Margaret Ann Batts

Aulander, NC - Mrs. Margaret Ann Batts, age 76, of Aulander, NC, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

She was born August 24, 1934 in Aulander, NC, the daughter of the Jesse Woolard Davidson and Audrey Mae Conner Davidson. She was also predeceased by her husband Samuel Eure Batts.

Survivors include her daughters, Holley Knowles and her husband Brian and Pamela Wilson and her husband Terry. Her brother, Harold Wayne Davidson. Her grandchildren, Michael Wilson, Heather Wilson, Kayla Jernigan, Madelyn Knowles, and Noah Knowles. Her great-grandchildren, Andrew Wilson, Ayden Wilson and Michela Wilson.

Funeral services will be held, Friday, October 22, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. Paul Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Amanda Marie George

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Amanda Marie George, age 25, of Roanoke Rapids, began her walk with Jesus on Sunday, October 17, 2010 in Charlotte, NC.

Amanda was a 2004 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School and graduated from Johnson and Wales University with a degree in Culinary Arts. She was an active member of Valley Community Church.

She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Dorothy George Wesson, her Great Uncle Buck Rose and cousins, Brooks Turner, Katie Dampier and Robby Dampier.

Left to cherish her memory are her parents Eddie and Billie Dampier George; her sister, Amelia George and her friend Rob Wilson of Truxton, NY, her friend Justin Kerr, her uncle Bobby Dampier and Cousin C.B. Holloman; her aunt Kathy and cousins Joseph, James, Danny and Richard Lynn; her aunt Marsha George of Richmond, VA and her aunt Brenda George of Tacoma, WA and a great-aunt, Beulah Rose.

A service to celebrate AmandaΒ’s life will be held, Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Valley Community Church in Weldon, NC, with Rev. David Schmultz and Minister Billy Meinsen officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service, and other times at 1112 Ohio Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to ATK (Advance The Kingdom Fund), c/o Valley Community Church, Weldon, NC 27897.

Mrs. Virginia Ruth Shearin Rigganty

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Virginia Ruth Shearin Riggan, age 97, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Warren Hills Nursing Home in Warrenton, NC.

Mrs. Riggan was born February 3, 1913 in Warren County, NC, the daughter of the late William Henry Shearin and Lula Lee Harris. She was also predeceased in death by her husband Richard Irvin Riggan, two sisters, Mae S. Harris, Lora S. Gray, two brothers, Andrew J. Shearin and Howard Shearin.

Mrs. Riggan retired from J.P. Stevens and Company with over 40 years of service. She was a member of East Tenth Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include a brother, Paul C. Shearin of Littleton, NC, a step-daughter, Marie R. Grant and her husband Marshall of Garysburg, NC, and their families, also many nieces and nephews. Also special friends, including Nellie Edwards, Blondie Merritt, Margie Brigman, Vashti Bradley and Helen Overton.

Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Minister Richard Brown officiating.

Mr. Lawrence Wayne Pope

Rich Square, NC - Mr. Lawrence Wayne Pope, age 66, of Rich Square, NC, died Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Pope was born April 28, 1944 in Newport News, Va., the son of the late L. E. Pope and Maggie Lee Vick Pope. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Lambert Pope.

Survivors include his children, David Wayne Pope and his wife Melanie of Trap, NC, Leigh Pope and her husband Brad Timberlake of Conway, NC, Tommy Pope and his wife Gayle of Rich Square, NC, and Michael Pope and his wife Gina, also of Rich Square. His sister, Jill Pope Martin of Milwaukee, NC. His brothers, Barry Pope of Nashville, NC, Jeff Pope of Rocky Mount, NC, Kyle Pope of Spring Hope, NC, and Kevin Pope of Roanoke Rapids.

His grandchildren, Dave, Dustin and Tyler Pope, Greg Bolton, Nichole Pope Martin, Chad and Dakota Timberlake, Marshall Timberlake, Micky Pope, Charity Ann Pope, Anthony, Arie, and Carson Richardson. Also several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Monday, October 18, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC, with Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Sunday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home in Rich Square.

Mr. Robert H. "Bob" Etheridge

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Robert H. "Bob" Etheridge, age 89, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Etheridge was born December 30, 1920 in Scobey, Mississippi, the son of the late Robert Etheridge and Lona Little Etheridge. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lee Coston Etheridge. He was retired from Remington Reem as a technician.

Mr. Etheridge served in the US Army Air Force from July 9, 1941 until November 28, 1945. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of Lakeview Park Baptist Church and currently a member of Victory Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Survivors include his half sister, Mae Macomber of Brevard, NC, his brother-in-law Dalton Coston of Littleton, NC. His cousins, Evelyn Avst of Clearwater, Florida and I.V. Brunson Freeman of Carrollton, Mississippi. Also many special friends and his church family at Victory Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held, Friday, October 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Doug Gross officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Victory Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
